Our History
On some of our apparel items, you will notice the date 1946 and the coordinates 45.39N, 84.63W. This represents not just the year the parish and shrine were established, but a testament to faith and community. In 1946, with only twelve Catholic families in Indian River, Bishop Haas boldly created a new parish, recognizing the many Catholics who vacationed in the area each summer. Masses were held in the township hall, a humble beginning that paved the way for growth and devotion. In 1948, Lansing agreed to sell the State Park land for just $1.00 and a box of candy for the secretary, marking a significant step in our journey of faith and togetherness.
